In Shuga Season 6 Episode 5 advancements are made but with heavy prices attached to them, and adolescents get up to all sorts with the bad decisions they make. By the end of the episode, things don’t look too good for some of our MTV Shuga Naija gang.
Alright guys, I’m back and I’m better (Bryson Tiller voice). Hope you all had a swell Easter period? Mine was depressing, but it doesn’t matter now I guess. I achieved little, but one thing I was able to do was watch all the Shuga Naija episodes from the past – thus, I am now well learned when it comes to MTV’s Shuga, and have a backstory for most of the characters in Season 6. No more speculation or confusion, just facts!
Princess is HIV positive, she contracted the virus after wilding out while crashing at Tobi’s hostel room with his roommate. She also got pregnant. Princess and Tobi eventually fell in love and did the deed! But Princess’ love for the good things of life led her to follow the same path as her sister, Sophie, in obtaining a somewhat sugar daddy (who then gave her HIV). Leila was a cute popular girl from secondary school. That’s basically it.
Oh yes, Tobi has turned to a bad boy now – he used to keep to himself and mostly locked himself up in his room, avoiding social gatherings and girls. Now, as we know, he parties hard and loves his women. He also used to have a crush on Adesua Etomi (her character name escapes me) but she had a boyfriend who was HIV positive, and she was sticking with her man. All done with the background info.
Spare Parts, No Spare Sense
Now, we start off the episode with Ebisinde and his friends who apparently are cashing out. Their illegal spare parts business has earned them some coin, and of course, they put the money to work almost immediately.
Fresh kicks and new phones acquired, they’re ready to turn the school upside down. Of course, Ebisinde only wants to catch the eyes of Diana, and fails (again). In all his gra gra, he fails to notice the lovey-dovey eyes being shot at him by Cynthia (as usual). It’s sad really. And it doesn’t look like they’re stopping the ‘spare parts business’ anytime soon, with the person they’re supplying demanding for more parts.
Ebisinde is going off the rails, but you have to admit, he’s cute as hell! I just wish he’d stop being dumb.
Faa is about to blow, as in the last episode we discovered that the girl had a nice voice! This discovery was aided by our struggling artist, Khalil. I really felt sorry for Khalil in this episode. Even with all his work, only Faa gets noticed and he’s kind of pushed back into the shadows (or cleaning supply closet) where he emerged from.

We’re treated to an emotional scene where he wonders if his dreams will ever come true. I really hope they do! And not with Tobi because that guy is just annoying at this point – give the guy a chance!
Then again, even with Faa seemingly being on the way to fame, her steps forward are soon met by a roadblock as of course, someone wants to be slept with in exchange for this progress. It’s none other than Bada who pesters her, encouraged further by the raving reviews Tobi gives about Faa‘s ‘performance’.
Faa caves in to Bada‘s sexual demands, but of course demands that a condom be used. It’s pretty sad but that’s her life or whatever. Even with this, her achievements, whether positive or not are understimated, as people such as Leila look down on her and write her off as ‘that girl who shakes her bum bum on camera’. Sigh. Well, I don’t blame Leila since her man was all up in this same bum bum a few episodes ago (*sips tea*) but of course, she doesn’t know this.
I’m Not a Sugar Baby!
Princess is back again and interacting with Leila’s brother who is one fine chocolate. He’s being #baeworthy #mcmmaterial by helping her around the house, and they seem to have good chemistry. This is all thrown away though when he discovers the business card in her bag (she was slipped this by the guy she struck up a convo with last week at ze club) clearly, he’s disappointed. Princess is disappointed he’s insinuating she’s aristo hunting and she tells him to get out. Man, that’s pretty sad. I’m sure they’ll make up later on.
On Education and Struggles
Hadiza and her mother have a touching moment too this episode. Her mother talks about how she wanted an education and all but then marriage and children happened. I think Hadiza‘s story is bordering on education for the girl child, and something happened to make Hadiza now a single teenage mother. Hopefully we’ll get more details soon. Hadiza is set on winning the debate for now though.
Bad Choices, Awful Results
Diana is back with her sketchy ways and bad birth-control advice. She packs her bag in the morning ready for the party she’s been anticipating, and she’s bringing her girls along. Though her boyfriend pesters her for Hadiza to show, her attempts to initiate Hadiza even if its just for one night, are thrown in her face as Hadiza is like ‘nah b, got a debate to win’. Looking back, this was honestly the best choice Hadiza could have made.
As the girls get ready to go, Diana‘s friends look to their matriarch (Diana) for advice concerning the demands of these older men. Her advice is so sage and deep: if they refuse condoms, no wahala. Just wash yourself out with alcohol and shake it out. I’m sure everyone rolled their eyes at that scene. The night doesn’t look any more promising – even if the girls are looking quite cute i.e. Cynthia. As they arrive with Leila in tow (somehow Diana and Leila linked up from the club) the sexually frustrated older men with money descend on them, and things escalate soon.

Eventually, Leila, Cynthia and one of the other girls seek refuge in a bathroom when things get too much. Leila calls Tobi immediately and they bounce out, leaving Diana and Frances behind. Diana seems like she can stay safe, at least she’s dating one of the guys so everyone else will stay away, but Frances isn’t so lucky. Inebriated with alcohol, she’s soon knocked out. It’s an unfortunate scene because she falls unconscious in the company of two older guys who clearly don’t intend to drive her home and tuck her in. This reminds me of Gidi Up (if you haven’t watched that series, you’re missing out) where Eki‘s younger sister goes to a party with her friend (Sharon Ooja), and her friend ends up being gang-raped. Sighs all around.
I really wonder what the effect of all this will be, but I guess we’ll have to wait for yet another episode coming out next week! If you’re joining us for the first time I welcome you, and you can read the previous recaps here:
