One Year of Blogging! + Giveaway

On this day a year ago, I published my first blog post after deciding to start a blog. It’s not a new decision, it’s something I’ve always done but in various ways and through various mediums. I’ve used Tumblr, and then my personal Instagram page in order to get my thoughts out there somehow. I’ve always loved expressing myself, and yet, this journey has definitely taken a turn. Mind of Amaka was born out of the need to express oneself in a space owned by me – I wanted to speak on whatever was coming to my mind, share my struggles and basically have a way to document my growth and experiences.

How I Started Blogging

Before I got into university, I had a lot of time on my hands and I explored various corners of Instagram. Eventually I started seeing bloggers appearing on my radar – not Linda Ikeji type bloggers, but lifestyle bloggers. People who shared bits of themselves with their readers, from their style, to their fascinations and reflections on the happenings of life. I remember reading the blogs of people like Sola Fagbemi, and eventually stumbling upon Ifeoma Amadi, Who What Fab at the time. I got inspired to start my blog eventually, but it was under a different name – The Introspect Closet. I wrote just one post which Sola Fagbemi commented on, leaving some solid sisterly advice – it was awesome. Either way, the blog didn’t work out like I thought it would.

I had an urge to create a blog with the name Mind of Amaka. I don’t know how the name came about considering I have thought of so many names a blog would have – it was a name that just seemed to pop up, and pop in such a way that I knew it wasn’t going anywhere. Therefore, I answered the call! I started on Blogspot initially but ported to WordPress – a wise decision, now I look back on it. I had made some posts on my blogspot blog but moved just one to my WordPress blog, and that was on April 24, 2018.

What Has A Year of Blogging Been Like?

I would say it’s been a year of discoveries and firsts. At first I was a bit of an island, just trying to focus on improving my content and different aspects of my blog. Eventually I branched out – writing a guest post on another blog and some for Pulse Bloggers and then going to my first blogger event! I have enjoyed every single bit of it – my blog is my world!

My blog has allowed me to get in touch with my creative side – I make graphics, take styled photos and most importantly, WRITE! Writing is important, and the more you do it, the better you get. I found that I kind of fell off writing fiction as much as I used to in high school (bye, Wattpad), and I needed a way to keep in touch with my writing. Writing has always been and will always be one of my talents – It’s something I won’t try to look down on because I’ve always done it from a young age and am confident in it. Sure, there may be some grammatical errors and typos here and there, but (flexes non-existent muscles).

For the Love of Content Creation

I love creating content – I love sitting down and typing away as the words turn into sentences. I love coming up with posts, creating graphics to go with them and of course, sharing them with the world. I especially like taking the photos for said posts. The best thing is that I’m doing it in a way that makes me comfortable – I don’t really worry about not meeting up with posting deadlines, because I have an efficient method in place which has worked for me.

My blog has allowed me to transcend the creative path that is writing, crossing over into product photography and product styling. This has been one really amazing development in my first year of blogging! It shows immense growth, because take a look at the three images below. The first was taken around May 2017, the second in September 2017 and the third was just recently in 2018. I’ve improved so much in my photography! I have better knowledge of phone photography, angles and the use of light and props to make photos come out amazing.

+ I purchased a domain name and became self hosted, moving from free WordPress to WordPress.org

+ I grew my followers on a page for my blog, having 900+ followers as of now!

+ I took things to the next level, offering product photography services. Follow my ‘studio’ @studioamaka on Instagram to keep in touch with my growth in photography!

+ Reached out to other bloggers and made friends, started networking.

The Re-Introduction

My introduction a year ago probably would have been along the lines of “Hello, I’m Amaka. I am a 19 year old trying to find myself, documenting my life experiences as a law student in this little space of mine.” Well, allow me to re-introduce myself. For more details, check my about page.

I’m Amaka, a 20 year old law student, blogger/content creator, and product photographer at Studio Amaka (@studioamaka). I like writing whatever comes to my mind, and I’m glad I have this little space of mine to do it. I’m not perfect, but I like to reflect. I’m a tad socially awkward, and don’t really have a style. I’m quite emotional, and I’m very confused about a lot of things, but I hope it will all work out in the end. I’m scared yet excited for the future, and I hope that you come along on this journey with me. You can follow me at @mindofamaka on all platforms – Instagram, Pinterest and Twitter.

Hopes for my Second Blog Year

In this next year – I hope to experiment more (photo wise) with composition, and try my hand at stop motion because stop motion is life – yet another creative medium that will give me joy! I hope to work with more brands, building my product photography portfolio. At this point, I’ve realised that getting products to review can be a tad overwhelming, so I prefer product photography. I’m still open to reviewing products – I’ll just be more selective – organic skincare is always my fave!

I wish I could’ve done something bigger, but hopefully as the blog grows, so will the opportunities to win stuff! I want to start taking stock photos soon, and so here is one I took the other day.

I’d like to give it to someone – you can use it for your blog, as a header for certain posts e.g. blog tips, a background to write quotes on – it’s all yours! To win:

+ Follow @mindofamaka and @studioamaka

+ Answer the quiz questions correctly

A winner will be selected at random from the QUALIFIED ENTRIES – make sure you do all the steps! Ends 30 April, 2018

Thank you for reading! Here’s to another awesome year of blogging – and consistency (I hope)
